What types of barcodes and 2D codes can FlexIPS read?
FlexIPS reads all common 1D linear barcodes (Code 128, Code 39, EAN/UPC, ITF, GS1-128) and 2D matrix codes (QR Code, Data Matrix, Micro QR, Aztec). It also reads Direct Part Marking (DPM) applied by laser, dot-peen, or chemical etch onto metal and plastic parts. A single station can read printed labels, laser-marked serials, and dot-peened metal parts without changeover.
Can it read damaged, dirty, or low-contrast codes?
Yes. Built-in error correction (Reed-Solomon for 2D codes), perspective correction for tilted marks, and tuned optics with controlled lighting let the reader recover payloads from partially damaged, dirty, low-contrast, or off-axis codes that defeat handheld scanners. Where a handheld scanner fails, the FlexIPS camera typically still reads the code on the first try.
How fast is barcode reading?
Decoding itself takes only a few milliseconds per code. Multiple codes anywhere in the field of view are read together within a normal station cycle, and the read repeats every cycle until every code is read, so reading keeps pace with the line and never becomes the bottleneck.
What is Direct Part Marking (DPM) reading?
DPM reading decodes a code that is permanently marked directly onto a part by laser engraving, dot-peen, or chemical etch, instead of on a printed label. This is common on metal and PCB components that must remain traceable for the full product life. FlexIPS reads DPM marks on curved, reflective, and low-contrast surfaces that defeat conventional scanners.
Does it support GS1 data parsing?
Yes. GS1-128 and GS1 Data Matrix payloads are parsed automatically. Application Identifiers (AI) for serial (21), lot/batch (10), expiry (17), GTIN (01), and more are split into structured fields that map directly to MES and traceability records, so genealogy data flows without manual mapping.
Can it read multiple barcodes at once?
Yes. Because the whole field of view is captured and decoded each cycle, FlexIPS reads multiple codes in the same image simultaneously, for example a panel with a serial, a lot, and a date code, re-trying until every code is read. Each decoded payload is tied to the correct position and written to the serial record.
What happens when a code cannot be read?
If a code is unreadable or the wrong variant is detected, the station returns a FAIL and routes the unit to FlexCheck with the captured image of the mark. The operator can review, retry, or perform a controlled override, and the no-read event is logged against the serial for traceability and yield analysis.
How does barcode reading connect to traceability?
The decoded payload (serial, lot, expiry, GTIN) is written directly to FlexDashboard and your MES or SQL store against the unit record. That links each part to its inspections, operator, station, and timestamp, giving you searchable, audit-ready genealogy from goods-in through final assembly.
